Castello Orsini

the Castello Orsini di Soriano It essentially consists of a massive building, constructed in several eras, in the shape of a parallelepiped, overlying by massive foundations with barbicans, and of an older tower-palace, attributable to the first half of the 13th century, built on the site of an older, more modest outpost dating back to before 1200.
The two buildings are then connected to each other, to the north, by an L-shaped wall (at the corner of which rests a cylindrical turret) and, to the south, by a smaller arm of construction, thus delimiting all around what was the original courtyard. Both the parallelepiped-shaped construction and the older tower-palace are surmounted by crowns of Guelph battlements, resting on hanging arches, in turn supported by corbels. The whole is surrounded by a patrol path, which runs continuously uphill (proceeding in an anti-clockwise direction) and is interrupted, at its highest point, by a crenellated ravelin and by a low quadrilateral tower, also with battlements, resting on the ravelin itself.
Although several modifications and additions have been made over the centuries, the Rocca Sorianese provides us with a clear vision of the Middle Ages even with its interiors: from the large and bright halls of the main floor to the dark underground. From 1849 to 1990 the castle was used, first by the Papal State and then by the Italian State, as a Penal Establishment for Mental and Physical Minors and, lastly, as a Workhouse. This use led to extensive alterations and even the construction of additional buildings both inside and outside the walls.
